Our Background
The Pontifical Commission Justitia et Pax was established in the Vatican in 1967 ny His Holiness Pope Paul VI, when he issued a challenge to the Dioceses all over the world to work for Justice and obtain peace, in line with the Social Teaching of the Church (STC).
The Zimbabwe Catholic Bishops’ Conference (ZCBC), then the Rhodesia Catholic Bishops’ Conference (RCBC), formed the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) at a national level in March 1972, during the colonial era at the height of the liberation struggle. The Commission dutifully compiled atrocities that were committed, monitoring the human rights situation and reporting to the ZCBC.
The CCJP is a Commission of the Catholic Church which deals with socio-political issues that affect the daily lives of our populace.
